This page is dedicated to the Bebe’ Carriere song Blue Runner.
Widely known in Louisiana but not known beyond musicologists outside of there.
This Creole song sits at the juncture of Cajun and what is known as Lala music.
Just this past week I finally heard an origination story to the song. It was told by Jourdan Thibodeaux as he introduced it. I hope to find a confirmation of the story. In the meantime, here is what he said.
Bebe was at his kitchen window watching his mother hang clothes. A blue runner snake began chasing her and she scrambled to get away. He went and got his fiddle and related what he saw on it. I have to guess that was in the 20’s or 30's. At that time music performances were at house dances both with both Cajun and Lala taking shape. It becomes that Creole song that every Cajun fiddler knows. It first shows on an Arhoolie recording Chris Strachwitz released in 1974.
For its uniqueness and importance to what came after, this page will try to show the rest of the country what it is all about.
